Science Classroom Gets a Major Upgrade

Over the summer, Miss Block’s science classroom at Hettinger Public School got a major makeover. The project updated an old science lab and created a better space for students to learn, experiment, and explore. Although there are still a few finishing touches left, the classroom has already changed a lot.

The science lab was original to the school building, which was believed to have been built in 1967. Over time, the room became outdated and needed major improvements. Some materials containing asbestos needed to be removed, several sinks were leaking or not working, and the electrical system was not functioning well. The classroom also lacked the setup and technology needed for modern science classes.

According to Darin Seamands (Superintendent) , the old classroom made it difficult for teachers to get creative with their lessons. The goal was to update the lab so teachers could teach modern science classes without having to work around problems with the room itself.

The renovation process started before summer break. During the last two days of school, staff began taking over the lab and preparing it for the changes. Students even helped get the process started. They were told that many things would be different when they returned to school three months later.

Students played an important role in the project. Miss Block (Science Teacher) said they were essential in helping move materials out of the classroom and bring things back in after the work was finished. Some students helped during study halls at the end of the school day, making it possible to move everything more quickly.

Students also had the chance to help with the construction during the summer. Some worked for David Parrill Construction and gained hands-on experience helping build the new space. This gave them an opportunity to be involved in the project instead of just seeing the finished classroom when they returned.

One of the biggest improvements is the new layout. The classroom now has a clear area for laboratory activities and another space for lectures. The new setup also allows the middle of the room to be opened up when needed. The board and desks can be moved to create one large space for different activities.

Block explained that the flexible layout will also make it easier to bring more classes into the room, including elementary students. Once the remaining work is finished, younger students may have opportunities to visit the lab and see science demonstrations.

The new classroom is designed to give students a better hands-on science experience. With a more useful layout, improved space, and room for different types of activities, students will have more opportunities to explore and experiment.

Although a few finishing touches remain, the renovation has already made a big difference. The updated science lab gives teachers more ways to teach and students more ways to learn, helping prepare the classroom for science education in the years ahead.
